Enter the Jungle, Explore Shipwrecks and More

A host of online resources to make learning more fun for kids and educators.
1. ENTER THE VIRTUAL JUNGLE AND MAKE YOUR OWN FILM

You can now showcase your talent while you learn about nature with National Geographic’s Wildlife Filmmaker. The Wildlife Filmaker is easy to use and doesn’t even require you to have an account. They have clips of beehives, Beluga whales, seahorses, elephants and even skunks! Sounds include an alligator hiss, a chicken cluck, chimp chatter and a turkey gobble. Sprinkle a dash of fun by adding the ‘circus’ music theme to your film. Just drag and drop film clips, sounds, music, add your own captions and your movie is ready for screening! Sadly, there is no way to embed these movies into a blog 🙁 (though you have the option of mailing it across to your friends, classmates, teachers, etc).

Your students will love this application. So, tell them to go ahead and have a blast and leave us a note if they make a movie you want us to see.

2. VISIT SHIPWRECKS WITH GOOGLE EARTH

Via Google Lat Long Blog

Google Earth 5.0 now allows you to navigate under the surface of the sea and explore the ocean floor to see shipwrecks, submarines, buoys, and much more. We’ve put together a placemark tour to help easily find the 3D models in the ocean. To access the tour, download the kml file from the Google Earth Gallery page. The tour will visit models such as the Titanic, Batttleship Bismark, Aquarius underwater laboratory, as well as other submarines, shipwrecks, and dive destinations.

3. IMPROVE YOUR GEOPGRAPHY WHILE YOU DONATE WATER

FreePoverty is a game that allows you to improve your geography while you donate water to charity. How does it work?

From the site:

Your mission here is to locate the place given to you [e.g. Rome, Italy] and how many cups of water we donate on your behalf depends on how accurate your answer is. Once you have located one city or landmark, another location will be shown to you. You may play the game however many times you wish. Of course, the more you play and the more you are correct, the greater difference you will make with your donation. If your answer is correct, 10 cups of water will be donated. The further away you are from the location, the number of cups will decrease. If your answer is nowhere near the exact location, no cups of water will be donated. Therefore by playing this game, not only are you doing a good deed for others, but you are also gaining knowledge for yourself.

Start playing!
