Beauty of Language

21st February is International Mother Language Day and our blog is hosting a celebration of languages. A series of blog posts by people from different walks of life – sharing their thoughts on languages, memories and more. International Mother Language Day is an observance held annually on 21 February worldwide to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.

(This post was sent to us by Nikheel A. Nikheel is a calligrapher and graphic designer based in Delhi. “To me, an alphabet is a perfect metaphor for unity in diversity. Each alphabet has its unique character in terms of phonetics and forms. Together, they are a beautiful example of coexistence and harmony, where individual alphabets come together to form a word and eventually a language, and hence a culture”, says Nikheel. For this series, Nikheel shared one of his artworks with us :

This is a very famous poem/phrase by great saint Dnyaneshwar. He was a 13th-century Marathi poet, philosopher and yogi. Here he talks about his mother tongue (Marathi), which happens to be my mother tongue too. He said, “How much ever I praise the beauty of this language, its not enough. Its sweetness is magnificent like Amrit”. Dnyaneshwar wrote in Marathi when the popular language of the educated/ learned was Sanskrit so that he could communicate and spread his knowledge to the masses that spoke Marathi, hence the importance of this verse. Also I think this applies to any language and script. Languages and scripts have the beauty to inspire and transform.
