Walking Bookfairs is in Bangalore

We’ve been following the work of Akshaya and Satabdi for a while and were amazed when we heard they were going on a road trip to take books to people across the country. I mean, we’ve thought of it too and hope it happens soon. But till then, we are cheering these book champions as they celebrate books through their journey.
For the folks in Bangalore – time to rejoice because Walking Bookfairs is in Bangalore! Catch Akshaya and Satabdi on 13th and 14th January. They are going to be at Brigade Road (in front of Mota Arcade) from 11 am to 7 pm on 13th January. Check their Facebook page or Twitter account to see where they will be on 14th January.
Books, packed to capacity in a travelling van. Could there be a more delightful thing for bibliophiles? That’s what Odisha-based Akshay Routray, 35, and Shatabdi Mishra, 32, will be bringing to the city, with the Walking BookFair van on Wednesday and Thursday. It’s a customised van filled with 4,000 books – from children’s fiction to bestsellers and award-winning books in English. And it will be in the city on Day 29 of its planned 90-day journey, which started in Bhubaneswar on December 15, 2015.
The idea came about when the booklovers decided to quit their jobs (Routray was working in a publishing house and Mishra used to work for an ad agency) and start a bookshop, The Walking Book Shop, in Bhubaneswar. In 2014, they decided to do something about the lack of bookstores and libraries in remote areas and villages by taking a similar trip of Odisha, where they met Ruskin Bond, who appreciated their effort and wished them luck. A love for travel and reading whetted the desire to take things to the next level, and they began planning this trip in 2015.
There will be a 20 per cent discount on the books “and there are no barriers — everyone can come and read whatever they want,” says Mishra, who is in the driver’s seat, quite literally.
Check their Facebook page for updates about their trip and catch them when they are in your city/town/village.
