As part of this year’s JUMPSTART conference, Pratham Books will also be hosting a panel discussion : ‘What is your Bhasha? What is your Language?’ on 30th August.

Time : 9:30 am- 2pm
Location : Multipurpose Hall, India International Centre, Delhi

How many Indians can read and write fluently in the languages that they speak? How many of them read newspapers or books? Did many of them study in one language and struggle to learn English as a subject? And is it the same the other way round? Is the high premium on knowing English in cities whittling away at the base of our mother tongues? Is a whole generation growing up without a deep knowledge of either English or their own mother tongue? How do we deepen our understanding of learning of languages among children and what role does literature play in that?

The panel comprising of experts in varied fields aims to discuss and share experiences about the teaching and learning of different languages and its impact on learning as a whole. Questions such as
why Authors choose to write in particular languages, their linguistic experiments and the hurdles that they face along the way will also be discussed.

These are important questions and issues for educationists, teachers of language and publishers. They are just as important for us as a society. After all, bhasha defines us in indefinable ways.
