More on Dr. Seuss

It was Dr. Seuss‘s birthday yesterday and when I asked Manisha Chaudhry (Head of content development- Pratham Books) about her view on Dr. Seuss, this is what she had to say …

…”I say!”…murmured Horton.”I’ve never heard tell
Of a small speck of dust that is able to yell.
So you know what I think?…Why, I think that there must
Be someone on top of that small speck of dust!
Some sort of a creature of very small size,
Too small to be seen by an elephant’s eyes…

“…some poor little person who’s shaking with fear
That he’ll blow in the pool! He has no way to steer!
I’ll just have to save him. Because, after all,
A person’s a person, no matter how small.”

(excerpt from Horton hears a Who! A Dr Seuss fable for the slightly more able)

Dr Seuss was a perennial favourite when my two children were learning to read. His zany, crazy, nutty flavour continues to delight as his books are a strict no-no for giving away to younger cousins. So firmly premised on having fun with language and doing the unexpected, Dr Seuss never hits the wrong note whether it is the underlying humanity of How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Horton Hears a Who or the tongue-rousing babble of There’s a Wocket in my Pocket. Happy Birthday Dr Seuss!
