One Day, One Story 2022

It’s that time of year again! We are so excited to bring back One Day, One Story – Pratham Books’ annual storytelling campaign celebrating International Literacy Day on September 8th.

After two years of conducting One Day, One Story virtually because of the Covid-19 pandemic, we are absolutely thrilled to go back to the original format – in-person, on-ground storytelling sessions conducted by Reading Champions for children!

At its heart, One Day, One Story encourages children to fall in love with reading. It is one of the many ways in which we work towards our mission at Pratham Books, to put ‘a book in every child’s hand’ and to share the joy of reading with as many children as possible. We believe that reading can be a transformative experience when discovered early on, and that storybooks are windows to new, different and exciting worlds. Through One Day, One Story, thousands of Reading Champions share the joy of reading with children across India and the world.

The two storybooks selected for One Day, One Story this year are:

Croak written by Kavitha Punniyamurthi and illustrated by Ekta Bharti, for younger children (3-8 years)

Beauty is Missing by Priya Kuriyan, for older children (8-12 years)

You can choose either or both of the books, available in several languages. If you are based in India, we can send you limited copies of the print books available in English, Hindi, Marathi and Tamil.

You are free to choose the place and time you want to conduct the session, any time between September 1st and 10th. You can also conduct other activities that you think may go with the theme of the book.

After your One Day, One Story storytelling session, send us a short write-up or send us some photos from the event and we will feature it on social media.

Please note:

  • For logistical reasons, we cannot ship books to international destinations, but we will share the PDF of the book with international registrants.
  • There are limited numbers of print books available. If we run out of books by the time you register, you can download an e-copy of the book here. Both storybooks are now available in 25+ languages. You can print the book on A4 paper or use the e-book on a tablet or laptop for your storytelling session.

If you have any queries, please mail [email protected] BEFORE filling in the form.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the book be sent for free or does the champion pay for it?

The book is sent to you for free (till stocks last) if you are located within India.

Does the Reading Champion have to find the venue?

Yes. Identify places where you can conduct this event in your city – a government school, an NGO, a library, a bookstore, a park, a train, your building… any place where you can host a group of children or where children generally come.

Approach the organisation and explain the concept to them. Most of them will be happy to host you for no charge.

This is the first time I am conducting a storytelling session. How should I prepare for it?

Read the book a few times. If you are reading to a younger age-group, see how you can tell the story without actually reading the book (to retain their attention). Think of activities that you can do after the storytelling to engage the children (example: can the story take on a skit form, can the story be a way to talk about an important issue, etc).

Can I conduct multiple events?

Definitely!!! The aim is to reach as many kids as possible. We’ve had champions who’ve conducted 2-3 sessions on the main day and then gone on to conduct sessions on other days too.

Should I document the event?

Yes please do! We expect all our Reading Champions to send us some documentation about the event conducted by them. You can send us mini videos, pictures or a write-up on the event which will tell us [and the whole wide world] about the experience of sharing the joy of reading with children through the magic of storybooks. You can also share your session on social media using the hashtag #OneDayOneStory2022 #PrathamBooks and you could post it on the One Day, One Story Facebook Group.

I really want to conduct a session but I am not free between 1st and 10th September? What should I do?

The aim of this campaign is to share the joy of reading with children. Most people conduct the session within the date range, around International Literacy Day which is on September 8th. But just in case you are unable to, you can still conduct it on a day close to the chosen date. Because kids getting to hear a story is more important than the date 🙂

We are also crowdfunding for One Day, One Story. If you want to contribute towards this campaign, you can donate books on Donate-a-Book. Click here to donate: https://bit.ly/3bYVAbu
