Are you a creator and/or translator who wants to make amazing picture books?
The picture book hackathon is back this year! Jointly organised by Pratham Books and the Singapore Book Council, running up to the 2023 Asian Festival of Children’s Content, the hackathon led to the creation of 9 original books last year. And we are hoping to create more with you again.
Registration is free.
What is the hackathon?
At this hackathon, participants will create and translate picture books in two days, mentored by the Pratham Books team. Each picture book will only be 6 frames or pages long, with a simple story at its heart that’s no longer than 30 to 40 words in length. Here is an example of a 6-frame story: https://storyweaver.org.in/stories/47915-rustle-bustle?mode=read
Your work can be in any South East Asian or South Asian language, with preference given to English, Hindi, Tamil, Chinese and Malay stories. The medium of instruction will be English, so a working knowledge of the language may be needed.
Selected participants will be required to sign a contract, releasing all work created during the hackathon under a CCBY 4.0 license. This is an open license that enables access to books to disenfranchised people across the world. The final books will be uploaded on StoryWeaver as a part of AFCC 2023.
When will the hackathon take place?
The hackathon will take place over the course of two days from 13 to14 May, 2023. It will be an online session, conducted over Zoom.
How do you participate in the hackathon?
As a creator, you will write and illustrate your simple, 6-frame story. Please send your 30 to 40 word story (the manuscript) and a sample illustrated page to [email protected] with the subject ‘AFCC Build Your Book 2023’. Do share your CV and 50-word bio with us too.
