A library is that sacred corner in a classroom providing an invaluable physical proximity to books that is critical to a child’s emotional and intellectual development. In our minds, library is a joyous space filled with books that opens up the reader’s mind and imagination. It is what seeds and nurtures an interest in reading, which is the foundation of all other learning.
We categorized our books by Reading Levels instead of age. The aim of Reading Levels on the back of every book is to help parents, buyers, librarians select the right books, and for children to gauge their own level of fluency, in a manner that is non-judgmental.
Relevance and Need
As most children from low-income families do not have access books outside of school, the school library remains the single source of reading material for them.
There is a huge body of research which is conclusive in demonstrating that merely providing a library like atmosphere often encourages children to spend more time on learning to read, reading more and loving to read. Younger children would love to read simply written and colourfully illustrated books. If they start off with a drab looking, text heavy schoolbook printed on dull paper in a single colour, with text that they cannot decode, they have no chance to grow fond of reading.
Colours over letters, enjoyment over learning, and exploration over knowledgehave to take precedence to instill a love for book reading in children. Older children need exposure to a wide variety of high-quality books on varied topics. They also need books that reflect the diverse and multicultural nature of our society.
In our endeavour to provide the library experience to the very low budget public and private schools, which are cash strapped and which have no designated space for a library, Pratham Books has designed this library product that is a low cost, high utility model. The Library-in-a-Classroom (LIC), is literally a library on the wall, with a 125+ enjoyable children’s books, attractively displayed and provides a
print rich environment for children. LIC is a product that was developed keeping in mind the limitations of schools that are infrastructure and resource scarce. A modular unit, which can be mounted on a wall and has a 125+ books is kept in classrooms and can be locked at the end of the school day for safe keeping.
