Pratham Books was set up in 2004 as a response to the need for good quality affordable books for children in Indian languages. At that time, Pratham Education Foundation had launched a nationwide campaign to promote reading and found that there was a dearth of good quality storybooks in Indian languages. Storybooks that would engage and capture a child’s imagination and encourage her to learn and practice reading. Our mission is to see ‘a book in every child’s hand’ and democratize the joy of reading.
Pratham Books was set up in Bangalore by Ms Rohini Nilekani who was the principal founder and donor and helped direct the strategy and vision of Pratham Books as Chairperson from 2004 to 2014. The other members of the founding Board of Trustees were Ashok Kamath and Rekha Menon.
