ZAKIR HUSAIN
Excerpt from Young World of The Hindu in August 2004…”Everyone
knows that Dr Zakir Husain was President of India. Lots of people
know that he was one of the great figures in the struggle for Indian
Independence. Quite a few people know that he was also a great educationist,
and one of the founders of Jamia Millia Islamia. But what most people
don’t know is that he was a wonderful storyteller. I can imagine
him sitting down in the evening surrounded by eager-faced girls and
boys. I imagine their eyes growing round and dreamy, as they listen
to stories of pooris that jump out of frying pans, little goats who
fight for their freedom, chickens that want to live like kings, and
all sorts of other delightful creations………Rehana
was the name of his dearly beloved little daughter, who died suddenly
when she was only four years old, leaving a big void in his life.
Perhaps he had made up Saeeda ki Amma, Poori jo kadhai se nikal bhagi,
Usi se thanda usi se garam, Murgi ka niral bachcha and other tales
for her bedtime. We will never know. All we know is that he left a
small treasure house for children….” |
