Read India Books
Read India Books was created in order to:
- Provide children with access to low cost, high quality books
- Publish books in multiple Indian languages
- Provide publishers with a platform to create affordable reading
material for children.
- Bring authors, illustrators, and producers of books together
to build a reading country.
- Urge the corporate sector to actively participate in this process
Since the beginning of 2004, Read India Books has managed to create
a paradigm shift in the world of publishing through our unique model.
We have proven that it is possible to develop high-quality books
for children that are affordable and therefore more accessible.
In just one year we have published 50 children’s titles in
four languages including English, Hindi, Marathi and Kannada. Typically,
these books are printed in four colours with attractive illustrations
spanning 20-32 pages. We have published stories written by famous
authors such as the late Indian President, Dr. Zakir Hussain, Olivia
Fraser and Manorama Jafa. Under the Read India brand no book costs
more than Rs. 25 in order to ensure that each and every child has
access to books. Over 400,000 copies of these books have been shipped
out across the nation to Pratham’s libraries and other centres.
Over the next one year, Read India Books hopes to develop and publish
an additional 150 titles. It is our hope that some day soon, through
the Read India Movement, every child will be reading well.
