With a view to create high quality low cost books for children,
especially in government schools, Pratham Books, a wing of the Akshara
Foundation, on Wednesday launched 50 Read India books.
Speaking at the launch of books, chairperson of Pratham Books and
Akshara Foundation, Rohini Nilekani, said they hoped to launch the
reading programme in 133 more schools in Karnataka next year.
"Nearly 100 community libraries have already been set up in
slums to give access to books for poor children. The Foundation
has covered nearly two lakh children under its accelerated reading
programme," she added.
Pratham has engaged more than three lakh children across 15 states
in the accelerated reading programme and established 3,000 community
libraries.
CEO of Pratham Books, Ashok Kamath, said, "In this third part
of our exercise, we are providing books in local languages for children
in the 4-14 age group."
