The Library Programme
Once children have been taught how to read, it is crucial to sustain
their interest by cultivating a reading habit. Children in slum communities
or rural areas do not have access to books or libraries. Pratham addresses
this need by creating libraries within schools and the community with
carefully chosen engaging and meaningful children’s books that
open up children’s minds and with a librarian who motivates
children to build a reading habit though essay writing, reading competitions,
story telling etc.
Libraries are equipped with books in English and regional languages
for varying age groups of children. There are approximately 4 books
for every child who is a library member. We also have Mobile Libraries
where the librarian goes door-to-door with books and motivates children
to read.
Pratham has established an extensive network of more than 2400
libraries across the country with a membership of 425,497 children. |
